Tottenham Hotspur wide midfielder Steven Bergwijn was having a pretty decent start of the season before he got kicked in the ankle while on international duty with the Netherlands. You might recall he was photographed on the sidelines with the Oranje with his ankle wrapped and thoroughly iced.
The injury turned out to not be that bad — ol’ Steve missed the Palace match but made it back to fitness in time to start against Rennes in the Europa Conference League, where he promptly got kicked in what appeared to be the same ankle. He was subbed off for that match and wasn’t deemed fit to play against Chelsea.
Now it turns out that this second injury might be a little worse than we thought. Bergwijn posted a photo of himself wearing a protective boot on his Instagram story today, and... welp.

Now, before you respond, yes we are absolutely reading a lot into what is basically a photo of a dude’s foot in a protective boot with a “Persevering Face” emoji. But hey, we’re a fan blog — it’s our job to overreact to crap like this.
This particular photo is a very poor substitute for an update from Tottenham on his status, but since we rarely get those and have to read the tea leaves to get actual information, this is a pretty distressing tea. It probably means that we shouldn’t count on Steve for Wednesday’s trip to Wolves in the League Cup, and who knows what it means for the North London Derby at the weekend.
Crud.
