Tottenham Hotspur head coach Nuno Espirito Santo has some big decisions to make ahead of Sunday’s first North London Derby of the season. In his regular pre-match press conference this morning, Nuno provided good news on the return of one first team regular to training, but also stated that two more players are still recovering from injury and will not feature.
Nuno confirmed that Brazilian winger Lucas Moura has returned to training ahead of the match at the Emirates, but Steven Bergwijn and Ryan Sessegnon are both still nursing injuries picked up in the past few weeks, with neither expected to feature.
“Stevie is not ok. [Sessegnon] also but the good news is that Lucas was able to join the group.
“I think I already explained, the injury [Bergwijn] has is very painful. So first of all he has to settle down the pain. He’s not totally stopped, he’s doing some fitness, upper body. But we have to be careful with this injury. For now he’s not available.”
Having Lucas back, even in a reserve role, would be important for Tottenham. Spurs have had some better — if not complete — performances in recent matches against Chelsea and Wolves, but have missed the width and directness of both Lucas and Bergwijn on the flanks. Giovani Lo Celso and Bryan Gil have both been utilized alongside Son Heung-Min and Harry Kane in the forward attacking band, but Lucas’ ability to carry the ball forward this season has been a positive as well.
Meanwhile, Arsenal have a clean bill of health heading into Sunday’s match, with Mikel Arteta having his full squad to choose from.
The match kicks off at 11:30 a.m. ET in the USA, 4:30 p.m. UK.
