good morning —
Your hoddler-in-chief returned home tonight to the news that Andre Braugher, who starred as Captain Raymond Holt in Brooklyn Nine Nine, has died.
And I am devastated.
Brooklyn Nine Nine brought so much laughter and joy into my life. Of the quirky ensemble, few made me laugh as hard as Braugher’s Holt.
Through the series, Holt grew from a robotic police chief breaking barriers into someone who became friends with those he worked. And who found a son in main character Jake Peralta.
It’s when the deadpan character breaks into somrthing so astonishingly funny that really made me love him.
Here’s one such moment:
But let’s also not forget that Raymond Holt was a serious badass, one who had to rise up the ranks of the NYPD as a gay black detective.
At times we forget this, what with Holt giving the orders most of the time. But here’s one moment where he’s in one of the series’ great fist fights. And he delivers the knockout line with such gusto:
“You took the wrong fluffy boy!”
Of all the lines that pop into my mind, though, is this next one.
And that’s because my financial advisor’s name is Derek.
There are so many great Raymond Holt moments, and dozens of them didn’t make this short list put together at such schort notice.
Those two episodes of Holt and Peralta were among the series’ best, with Holt truly becoming a member of the squad. Whether it was him pretending to be heterosexual, getting impaled by a metal pipe, or needing assistance to get into a van, it was a treasure to watch.
Gosh, I’m so very sad that Braugher has passed away. His character made me laugh so, so much.
There aren’t many greater gifts to give the world than laughter.
