I thought I’d only need to write one piece this week about Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg’s various links away from Tottenham Hotspur, but some news today has put paid to that. I wrote a couple of days ago about the wantaway Dane and his links with Juventus, Barcelona, and Ajax, but there’s now a new name to add to the list: Napoli.
Gianluca Di Marzio has more:
#Calciomercato | Il @sscnapoli punta sempre su uno tra #Faraoni e #Mazzocchi per la fascia destra. #Ostigaard in uscita, si cercherà un difensore centrale per sostituirlo. Per il centrocampo sondati #Hojbjerg degli @SpursOfficial e #Soumaré del @SevillaFC https://t.co/WuLMrcyNdb— Gianluca Di Marzio (@DiMarzio) December 22, 2023
The long and short of the report is that the Serie A defending champions have Hojbjerg on a list to reinforce their midfield. According to the piece, Napoli’s preference is the slightly younger Boubakary Soumare of Sevilla, but their belief is that he could be difficult to pry away from the Spanish side, and therefore their eyes have turned to Tottenham’s Danish stalwart.
When it comes to reporting on Italian clubs, Di Marzio is as good as it gets - unless of course it’s one of his underlings writing on his site, in which case Bat Country - but this is straight from Di Marzio himself, so there’s a good chance there’s a lot of truth to this report. Like I said in my previous piece, I think General Ho would fit well in Italy; and I think Spurs would need to do some work to replace him, as he is still a valuable depth piece in a squad decimated by injury and suspension.
This isn’t the last we’ve heard on a Hojbjerg departure, nor on the Spurs midfield this January. We’ll keep you posted!
