Tottenham got the striker they needed in Roberto Soldado, but might they add another on deadline day?

This post is part of a deadline morning series on potential Tottenham transfers. You can find all of the posts in the series right here, as well as the initial post explaining this series right here.

Ever since they sold Dimitar Berbatov, Tottenham Hotspur needed a star striker. The Peter Crouch and Jermain Defoe were suitable, but hardly spectacular, while Emmanuel Adebayor never found the dominant form that Spurs hoped he would. It reached the point that it seemed like Daniel Levy would never shell out the cash necessary to sign a top flight striker ... and then came Roberto Soldado.

Spurs got their man just this summer and for a club record fee at that. Finally, they had solved their problem up front it seemed, but maybe not quite. With a handful of clubs interested in Jermain Defoe and Emmanuel Adebayor still on the outs, Tottenham may need another striker to go along with Soldado.

Who might Spurs sign up front? There aren't any firm links between the club and strikers, but there are a few players who might fit the bill:

Javier Hernandez: Spurs have been loosely linked to the Manchester United man, who is fighting an uphill battle for playing time at Old Trafford. He would be a great signing for Tottenham, capable of playing in Soldado's stead or with the Spaniard when called for. His unique ability to somehow get free in front of goal and find the ball would be useful as an option off the bench and Spurs surely could have used him against Arsenal for that reason. Unfortunately, because he is good it is unlikely that Tottenham could sign him at a decent price for a second choice striker. Verdict: Would be phenomenal, but don't count on it.

Demba Ba: Jose Mourinho has absolutely no use for Ba, apparently and the striker will almost certainly leave Stamford Bridge, but Spurs are an unlikely landing spot. Tottenham are not on good terms with Chelsea and beyond the price or anything else that may or may not make this a good footballing move for the teams and player, the clubs just won't deal with each other. Verdict: Don't count on it.

Hulk: The Brazilian can play on the right wing or center forward, which happen to be the two positions Spurs filled with £30 million transfers each. Verdict: But he once played for AVB!

Kenwyne Jones: Stoke are hoping to sign another striker, which may make Jones expendable. It's been a while since Jones was much of a goalscorer, but he is a physical presence and is hardly the worst squad player. The player is unlikely to sign off on a deal because he is reportedly in search of more first team football than he's getting with the Potters, though. Verdict: The odds of this are somewhere between no and hell no.

Libor Kozak: The Czech international has been linked to Aston Villa and at £5 million, he seems a rather prudent buy, but that's only if you haven't watched him play. Simply put, he's tall and usually worthless. Kozak scored 10 goal last season, but none in the league, where he made 18 appearances. He's a mess with the ball at his feet and he's 24 years old now so he no longer qualifies as young and full of potential. Verdict: Please no.

Tim Matavz: He's big, skillful and he hasn't been challenged by the Eredivisie in quite some time, but PSV are unlikely to sell unless they get a monster bid and a monster bid for a backup is pretty ridiculous. Verdict: No, even if I want it so.

Aron Johannsson: Go America. Verdict: Bryan would be so full of rage.

Yeah, we're seriously doing this again.

This post is part of a deadline morning series on potential Tottenham transfers. You can find all of the posts in the series right here, as well as the initial post explaining this series right here.

Tottenham Hotspur are apparently linked with Tom Ince. No one really knows why. He was liked to Spurs earlier in the window when they didn't have Nacer Chadli, Erik Lamela and Christian Eriksen. Then a fresh link popped up on deadline day. Go explain that one.

The only reasonable explanation for this that I can think of is that someone's about to bid a really dumb amount of money for Aaron Lennon. Or Franco Baldini is drunk. Not that I'm slagging off Tom Ince, he's a very good player and he'll have a successful Premier League career. I just don't know what a team with our wingers and attacking midfielders wants with him.

If we sign him ... well, good luck beating out Chadli for a first team place, I guess.

Quick bio: Tom Ince is an attacking winger who can play on either side of the pitch. He couldn't quite cut it at Liverpool, so they let him go to Blackpool for virtually nothing. That was dumb. He's been sensational for Blackpool.

Age: 21

Likelihood he's transfered today: Moderate. He's said that he doesn't really want to leave his family, but he can go up to Blackpool from London and see them all the time. Also, he plays for a Championship team that doesn't have a ton of money.

Potential suitors: Tottenham Hotspur and literally every other team in the Premier League outside of the Sky Six.

Price if he's sold: Blackpool have previously accepted bids of £8m for him.

Are Spurs the front-runners?: Yep, by far the best club that would be in for him. Though, if Everton made a move, he'd be able to see his family more often and that would probably sway his decision a bit.

The verdict - Could he be a Spurs player on September 3?: Yep. If Spurs are actually interested and he's not making a stink about wanting to stay close to his family, absolutely. Though I'm not really sure why we still want him.

The Togolese striker has been tapped for a move away from Spurs since his disaster of a campaign in 2012-13.

This post is part of a deadline morning series on potential Tottenham transfers. You can find all of the posts in the series right here, as well as the initial post explaining this series right here.

Pity poor Emmanuel Adebayor. Once considered the savior of Tottenham's faltering attack after his outstanding loan from Manchester City back in 2011-2012, he never really lived up to the hype and suffered through a rather dismal campaign last year. Ade's always had the reputation – deserved or not – of only playing hard when he's trying to get a new contract. I'm not sure I believe that, but it's certainly played out in that way during his tenure at Tottenham Hotspur. While he played quite well and worked his tail off last year after his return from the African Cup of Nations, unfortunately that effort never translated into goals.

Maybe because of this, Ade's been linked for a move away from north London for pretty much the entire transfer window. Turkish sides Besiktas and Fenerbahce are said to be very interested in signing him, and more recently he's been linked to Schalke 04 in the Bundesliga.

We haven't seen much of Ade lately; he was granted a period of compassionate leave away from the club after the recent death of his brother, but nobody's talking much about whether that leave is up, and why Ade's not been featuring at all for the club thus far this season. Maybe he's simply not fit. Maybe it's something else entirely.

Quick bio: Sheyi Emmanuel Adebayor is a Togolese striker who rose to stardom anchoring the front line for Arsenal and later for Manchester City. A bit of a hot-head, he fell out of favor with Roberto Mancini and came to Spurs in 2010 on loan where he scored 17 goals in all competitions. Tottenham bought him outright at the beginning of the 2012-13 season.

Age: 29

Likelihood he'll play if he stays: Meh

Potential suitors: Besiktas, Fenerbahce, Schalke

Price if he's sold: Hopefully £10m or so. Double-digits would be nice.

Loan or sale?: Sale. Ade's wages are a millstone around most club's neck, but he's already at £100k/wk plus whatever Manchester City is still paying him. No use keeping him around with those wages if he's not going to play.

The verdict - Will he be an active Spurs player on September 3?: 50/50, quite honestly. Ade played sporadically in the preseason, but hasn't even been on the side in the matches Tottenham have played so far this year. He'd be firmly ensconced behind Roberto Soldado in the pecking order, and would probably be relegated to Europa and cup duties except in the case of injury. If Spurs can find a team that will take him and his wages off the bill, it wouldn't surprise in the least to see him depart before the end of the window.

Yeah, I'm all-in on this. I don't care how dumb this rumor is. I don't care how unrealistic this is. CHICHARITO!

This post is part of a deadline morning series on potential Tottenham transfers. You can find all of the posts in the series right here, as well as the initial post explaining this series right here.

Tottenham Hotspur were vaguely linked to Javier Hernandez last week, so we're just going to roll with this. Sure, this falls under the category of 'hopeful' and maybe even 'clutching at straws', but I love Chicharito so you're going to need to get over it.

In the event that David Moyes wants to hold on to Wayne Rooney (or no one else wants to pay for Rooney), he can probably afford to part with someone. United has a million good up and coming young attackers and still technically has Federico Macheda on their books if they need an emergency striker. They're probably not going to miss Hernandez a ton.

Spurs are also likely to get a bid or two for Jermain Defoe on Monday and might be able to drive up the price. In the completely mythological event that Defoe can be sold for £10m and Hernandez is available for £15m, it's a no-brainer.

Quick bio: Javier Hernandez is a striker most noted for his pace and finishing instincts. He's a younger, more complete, more modern version of Jermain Defoe. He started his career at Chivas Guadalajara, who he signed with at just 11. He finally broke through in the 2009-10 season before signing for Manchester United. With the Red Devils, he has 50 goals in 117 appearances, many of them substitute appearances.

Age: 25

Likelihood he's transfered today: Low to moderate. Manchester United don't exactly need the money and can afford to have a very deep bench.

Potential suitors: Really anyone on earth that could use a striker. If he's actually available, it's likely that Spurs have plenty of competition. Hell, Major League Soccer might meet his asking price.

Price if he's sold: Around £15m. Perhaps up to £20m.

Are Spurs the front-runners?: In the event he's for sale, probably. It's possible Arsenal or Atletico Madrid could come in and gazump us.

The verdict - Could he be a Spurs player on September 3?: Could he? Yes. Will he be? Highly doubtful. But I hope it happens.

At some point this season, Tom Carroll will probably go out on loan. No one knows when or where.

This post is part of a deadline morning series on potential Tottenham transfers. You can find all of the posts in the series right here, as well as the initial post explaining this series right here.

The future is bright for Tom Carroll, one of the most creative and technically gifted English youngsters we've seen in quite some time. His confidence, vision and decision-making on the ball are absolutely incredible for someone who's only played 49 games of senior football in his career, and even if he doesn't fulfill his potential, there's no question that he'll be a solid Premier League player.

Unfortunately for Carroll, he's stuck behind a pretty loaded midfield at Tottenham at the moment. He's also tinier than the 5'8" he's listed at and really skinny. He needs game time somewhere, and I trust Andre Villas-Boas, Tim Sherwood and Co. to decide what's best for his game at the moment.

Ian Holloway is interested in taking him, while Spurs seem to want to send him to Ajax. Both options aren't looking great at the moment, with Palace talking to Barry Bannan and Ajax having signed Lerin Duarte. Will Carroll find a place where he can finally make the step up and become the player we all know he can be?

Quick bio: Tom Carroll is a young creative central midfielder that joined Tottenham Hotspur when he was 16. He's had a couple of loan spells, quite a few nice first team appearances and some England U21 work, but he's not quite ready for a regular first team place at Spurs. We ranked him as our No. 1 prospect this summer.

Age: 21

Likelihood he'll play if he stays: Not great

Potential suitors: Ajax, Crystal Palace, the entire Championship

Price if he's sold: He won't be sold.

Loan or sale?: Loan, Andre Villas-Boas has been clear about him having a future at Spurs.

The verdict - Will he be an active Spurs player on September 3?: Decent, but that's just because the loan deadline is later than the transfer deadline. There's a good chance that Carroll could be sent somewhere on loan a few days after the deadline. I assume that he will be on loan somewhere by the end of the month.

Don't just hang your hopes on Fabio Coentrao. Dream big!

This post is part of a deadline morning series on potential Tottenham transfers. You can find all of the posts in the series right here, as well as the initial post explaining this series right here.

Tottenham Hotspur may or may not be able to sign Fabio Coentrao, who we wrote about earlier. Even if they can't get him, they probably want to sign a left back of some kind, since they've had Benoit Assou-Ekotto banished from the training ground this August. Coentrao's the only left back we've been seriously linked with, but that doesn't mean much. We signed Christian Eriksen less than two days after rumors popped up.

With that in mind, here are a few names that you might spot on Twitter and message boards at some point today.

Leighton Baines: Might as well lead with the obvious, huh? It seems like Manchester United will get one of Baines and Fellaini or neither, but you never know. Maybe Baines is willing to stay if Fellaini is, but once Fellaini's sold, he'll get angry and want out? Maybe by that time, United already have Coentrao or decide they don't need a left back. Crazier things have happened. But stiil. Verdict: Highly unlikely.

Ben Davies: It's highly unlikely that Swansea are going to sell this late in the window. They might even call our bid 'derisory'. But hey, they still have Neil Taylor, who's on his way back from injury. Also, we could buy Neil Taylor. He's pretty good. Verdict: Naa.

Cheikh M'Bengue: Toulouse are still pretty goshdang broke, even after we paid them good money for Etienne Capoue. M'Bengue is a versatile and experienced left back, but at 25, his best years are probably still in front of him. He's got a bit of a mean streak to him. Verdict: Wouldn't be shocking.

Alvaro Pereira: He's worked with AVB before. He's got a great left foot. He's experienced, He's still just 27. He didn't play for Inter Milan today and I bet they'd sell him if they got a decent offer. He also can't defend a damn snail. Verdict: NO GOD NO PLEASE NO. Like Danny Rose only worse at everything.

Eliaquin Mangala: He's not really a left back, but maybe that's a good thing? He's actually a central defender primarily, but a competent left back. Alex Sandro is the starting left back and Porto seem to prefer Maicon and Nicolas Otamendi in the middle. Diego Reyes was just purchased too. They might want to cash in. Verdict: Only preferable if Kaboul had an injury setback, fingers crossed.

Guilherme Siqueira: What if Real Madrid decide not to sell Coentrao after all? Well, we could just buy the guy Madrid was going to buy as his replacement. Pozzo still wants to get paid. Verdict: Not crazy and not a bad signing. Could actually be a thing.

Weirder things have happened than Spurs selling Jermain Defoe on deadline day.

This post is part of a deadline morning series on potential Tottenham transfers. You can find all of the posts in the series right here, as well as the initial post explaining this series right here.

Jermain Defoe is one of just two fit Tottenham Hotspur strikers at the moment. Last year, he was one of only two strikers for most of the campaign. He wasn't great -- he scored 11 league goals and 15 in all competitions -- but it certainly wasn't a poor return for a player who was being used in a system and role he hasn't played in during his career.

While Defoe has worked on his hold-up play quite a bit and he's still a great energy guy off the bench, he doesn't fit the current Spurs team. He's a Harry Redknapp guy, best utilized in a direct system and paired with a target man. He's just going to be backup trying to extend his career in a team that doesn't suit him if he stays at Spurs.

Quick bio: Jermain Defoe has played for Tottenham in two spells: From 2004-08 and 2009-present. In that time, he's scored 135 goals for Spurs and 90 in the Premier League. He's wonderful and we love him. He's also a wee bit of a specialist from a previous era.

Age: 30

Likelihood he'll play if he stays: Not great, but you never know when injuries happen.

Potential suitors: West Brom, Stoke, Newcastle, West Ham ... you name an average English team, they want him.

Price if he's sold: £5-10m

Loan or sale?: Sale, no use loaning a 30-year-old.

The verdict - Will he be an active Spurs player on September 3?: I'm actually going to guess that Defoe makes a surprise departure. Notice the wide variation in the predicted price? That's because the presence of four (or more) clubs in the Defoe bidding could spark a bit of a bidding war that brings his price tag up to eight figures for whoever really wants him. Spurs can buy a comparable player in his early 20s for that price. I'm not showing Jermain the door for nothing, but I seriously think that enough mid-table teams with money are desperate that Levy and Baldini won't be able to say no.

It's been a crazy summer. Why not get a little crazier with an upgrade at left back?

This post is part of a deadline morning series on potential Tottenham transfers. You can find all of the posts in the series right here, as well as the initial post explaining this series right here.

Marcelo is first choice left back at Real Madrid, there are a couple of other players who can fill in at that spot at the Bernabeu and Granada seems willing to cash in on their star, Guilherme Siqueira, who Madrid is reportedly interested in. There doesn't look to be a place at the Bernabeu for Fabio Coentrao under Carlo Ancelotti.

Coentrao's still a useful player, though, and has waffled about whether or not he'd like to leave. Madrid has also waffled about whether or not they'd like to sell him. Not only do we not know whether or not he has any interest in going to Tottenham Hotspur, we don't know if he's actually for sale, period. The rags say he is and say that Spurs are still talking to him, but no one really seems to know anything.

Quick bio: Fabio Coentrao is an attacking left back who joined Real Madrid from Benfica in 2011. They paid £25m for him, but seem resigned to not recouping that entire fee. He's played left midfield and central midfield as well, and is certainly better going forward than he is at defending.

Age: 25

Likelihood he's transfered today: Moderate to high. He's probably not in Real Madrid's plans. There are conflicting reports on how determined he is to leave, but it seems like he'd prefer a transfer to signing a new contract with Madrid.

Potential suitors: Tottenham Hotspur seem like the biggest one, though Manchester United could make a move if Everton refuse to budge on Leighton Baines.

Price if he's sold: £15-17m.

Are Spurs the front-runners?: I'd say so, I don't think United or any other team 'bigger' than Spurs is that serious about him.

The verdict - Could he be a Spurs player on September 3?: Yes, I think it's quite possible, but I wouldn't be stunned if we buy a different, less expensive left back that we haven't been linked to that strongly (or at all).
