Tottenham Hotspur have exited European competition, thanks to a poor performance away to Fiorentina on Thursday. They only once looked like scoring in a 2-0 loss on the night, which sent the Viola through to the next round with a 3-1 aggregate victory.

Spurs didn't really look under threat early, and were a bit fortunate when Mati Fernandez picked up an injury and had to be replaced by Alberto Aquilani. Tottenham had their best chance of the game in the 29th minute, when Roberto Soldado and Nacer Chadli were clear in on goal with no defenders between them and the keeper, but Soldado tapped the ball to Neto instead of hitting a good pass or shooting.

Fiorentina took the lead in the 54th minute, thanks to a gift from Federico Fazio. He gave the ball away, then was beaten for pace by Mario Gomez. The German ran onto a through ball from Milan Badelj and poked the ball past Hugo Lloris, adding to his team's advantage.

Mohamed Salah effectively ended the match in the 71st minute. Jan Vertonghen should have been able to clear a pass into the box, but touched the ball towards Salah and made it easy for him to score. Vertonghen was subsequently ragesubbed by Mauricio Pochettino.

Uh, on to the League Cup final, I guess.
