Tottenham Hotspur are in need of a quality central defender, but we haven't been linked to many. Enter Duncan Castles, who's linked us to one that I'd really rather not be linked with, Southampton's Jose Fonte.
New manager Mauricio Pochettino has taken a direct role in approaching potential new recruits, meeting earlier this week to discuss the transfers of Portuguese defenders Jose Fonte and Miguel Lopes.
Fonte, 30, has just a single season left on his Southampton contract and would be allowed to leave the South Coast club for a reasonable transfer fee.
Lopes we heard about earlier in the week, but the potential signing of Fonte is a new development, and one I'm not particularly fond of. He's a cheap, veteran option who isn't good enough to be first choice for Spurs, but wouldn't be an awful guy to have on our bench. That sounds a lot like Michael Dawson. We already have Michael Dawson, so I don't see the point in buying another one.
I'd like to write this off as a work of fiction cooked up by someone desperate to churn out as many plausible stories as possible, but that's not really Castles' MO. As we've noted before, he's usually pretty spot-on with Spurs rumors.
