Add Douglas Costa to the list of wingers Spurs are interested in

Sascha Steinbach

While Tottenham Hotspur seem to know exactly which central defender and central midfielder they would like to buy, it appears that their winger targets are more loosely defined. They've been linked to Memphis Depay, Florian Thauvin, and now Shakhtar Donetsk's Douglas Costa. The Express says we're pondering a bid.

Of course, the Express saying we're pondering a bid doesn't mean much of anything, but it does seem like Spurs are sniffing around quite a few wingers in case Memphis Depay opts to sign an extension with PSV Eindhoven or go to a bigger team. Costa is one of many Shakhtar players not thrilled with the current political situation in Ukraine, and he'd probably like to leave if possible.

Shakhtar's chairman said anyone who wants Costa will have to meet his release clause, but that doesn't mean anything. That's how any decent chairman starts a negotiation. The first time someone calls him up and makes an actual offer, he might start to change his tune a bit.

But even if that was a bogus claim, there's a good chance that Costa would cost more than Depay, Thauvin, or other similar targets. He's also stagnated a bit in recent years and might not be worth a huge sum of money, though it's certainly possible that all he needs is a change of scenery to reach his potential.

There's not much to this, but it's a reminder that unless something changes with the Depay situation, we're going to be linked to a lot of different wingers.
