Southampton reject latest Jay Rodriguez bid

So much for that.

Tony Marshall

Tottenham Hotspur continued to attempt to sign Jay Rodriguez on transfer deadline day, and Southampton have continued to shut them down. Jeremy Wilson has reported via the Telegraph's live blog that the Saints have rejected Spurs' latest bid for the wide forward.

"Southampton have rejected Tottenham's latest bid for Jay Rodriguez and are no longer interested in Andros Townsend."

That last part is notable. Southampton were interested in filling a vacant wing spot with Townsend, but instead, they've opted to go for Red Bull Salzburg man Sadio Mane. They're going to pay around, if not a bit less, than the £12m they bid for Townsend.

There are just under six hours left in the window and Daniel Levy is still Daniel Levy, but this is probably it for this transfer saga. It would be extremely surprising if Spurs were able to sign Rodriguez now. This appears to be the Saints actually putting their foot down for good, and Spurs will have to look elsewhere if they want to sign a player who plays like Rodriguez. That 'elsewhere' is probably Danny Welbeck.
