Danny Welbeck undergoing medical at Arsenal as Spurs look to be beaten

Arsenal look to have pipped Spurs for the forward.

Danny Welbeck looked set for Tottenham Hotspur. And now, somehow, he looks to be on his way to Arsenal.

Sky Sports News say that Welbeck is undergoing a medical with the Gunners, who appear to have beaten out Spurs for the forward. He is expected to be joining Arsenal on loan.

Spurs had been linked to Welbeck all day. Manchester United were happy to let him go, with Radamel Falcao coming in. As soon as Falcao signed, Welbeck would be free to leave and Tottenham seemed to be his landing spot. The player was reportedly open to joining Spurs and Mauricio Pochettino thinks highly of Welbeck, so it all made sense. Spurs just had to wait out the Falcao deal and then wrap things up.

Instead, they may have just been waiting for Arsenal to swoop in. If the Gunners can wrap up the deal, not only will they have strengthened their side, but they may have dealt Spurs a serious blow.

Tottenham were clearly looking to sign a forward, either an outright striker or goalscoring winger, as Pochettino wanted a more direct option, Welbeck looked to be their last option. Southampton have repeatedly turned away their overtures for Jay Rodriguez and the Saints also look near a deal for Sadio Mane. Those two, as well as Welbeck, looked to be Spurs' three options for the player Pochettino wanted and if Arsenal do sign Welbeck, they could be left with none of them.
