Tottenham Hotspur were supposed to be signing Danny Welbeck. Instead, Arsenal are going to do it.
The Gunners are wrapping up a £16 million deal for Welbeck, according to the BBC.
Welbeck had been linked to Spurs for much of deadline day, but it was going to be a loan. Then, Welbeck's agent said he only wanted a permanent transfer, Arsenal got into the mix and Spurs fell out. Now, the Gunners are finishing up the deal.
Mauricio Pochettino has been chasing a forward or direct, attack-minded winger all summer and Welbeck was going to be that guy for him. Even as Jay Rodriguez and Sadio Mane fell off, Spurs were going to get Welbeck and all would be well. But it's not going to happen now and Pochettino isn't going to get the man he wanted.
That Welbeck went to Arsenal is just salt in the wound. The bright side is that while the Gunners needed a striker, they needed a defensive midfielder and center back even more, but haven't signed either so they remain a flawed squad, just like Spurs.
And who knows, with the deadline creeping up, maybe they won't get the deal done and Arsenal can also have missed out on Welbeck.
