Tottenham defender unhappy, wants to leave for league rivals

Sonny’s gonna be crushed.

Despite a bunch of low-level grumbling coming from the Kevin Wimmer camp in the past half year or so, we haven’t really heard a whole lot from the big Austrian himself.

That appears to be changing. The former Cologne star has seemingly fallen out of favor with Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino and now has admitted to Sky Sports Austria that he’s unhappy and is ready to consider offers to leave. He’s linked to Southampton, and wants to stay in the Premier League if possible.

The Sky Sports Austria video is geo-locked to Europe, but Read Southampton has a good translation of his comments.

"24 years of age is where it is most important to play regularly and not only have to train week after week and sit of the bench. In the next few days and weeks, the main focus will certainly be placed on what is there for offers.

"For me, it would be the most beautiful if I could stay in the Premier League In Cologne, I have experienced three super years. I believe that Cologne is always a very nice step for me, you have to look at what happens, but I would prefer it if I could remain in the Premier League."

I mean, nobody should really be surprised by this. In fact, I’m a little shocked it’s taken this long for Wimmer to really speak his mind about his Tottenham future. Spurs are pretty open about looking for a new central defender, and if that’s the case (and assuming Eric Dier will be used as a first choice defensive midfielder) Wimmer is the odd man out. I don’t really know what’s changed between 2015-16, when Wimmer was outstanding beside Toby Alderweireld in a back four, and now, unless Pochettino isn’t convinced that Wimmer can hack it in a defensive back three.

But the real loser here is Son Heung-Min, who came back from a disappointing first season at White Hart Lane to score 22 goals last season and have an amazing year, and is rewarded for his offensive brilliance by potentially losing his best friend. Breaking up a bromance like that one should only be done in extreme circumstances, imho. Poor Sonny. Who will be his date to the Asian Awards now?
